How to Test Coax Cable Ends

time2012/02/22

Coaxial cables are used to transmit video and audio signals for technology such as television and the internet. If you're having trouble getting a clear signal on your television or computer and have already tested those pieces of equipment themselves, the coaxial cable could be to blame. There are two parts to the coaxial cable: the cable itself and the end caps, also called connectors. Simple trial and error is the best --- and cheapest --- way to test and troubleshoot these connectors.

Turn off and unplug the electronic devices to which the coaxial cable is connected.

Disconnect one end of the coaxial cable from the electronic device.

Inspect the connector to make sure it isn't broken or corroded. It should have a single prong in the center of it; make sure this prong isn't bent or broken. If it is misshaped, use needle-nose pliers to straighten it.

Remove the connector from the coaxial cable. You shouldn't do this if the cable was manufactured with the connectors already attached, as this could damage the fiber optic cable. If you used raw cable and attached the connectors yourself, then you should remove the connector and set it to the side.

Replace the old connector with a new one. Most connectors are screw on and can be attached by hand. Make sure the connection is secure before moving on.

Reinsert the new connector into your electronic device. Plug that electronic device back into the outlet and turn it on. If your signal improves, you know the connector you just replaced was the problem. If signal problems persist, repeat the above steps on the connector on the other end of the coaxial cable. If the signal still doesn't improve, it may not be the connectors that are the problem, but something else.
